What Is MVIS and Why It Matters to Independent Workshops in Australia

Introduction
On 1 July 2022, the Motor Vehicle Information Scheme (MVIS) became law in Australia. While it may sound like just another regulation, MVIS is actually a transformative opportunity for independent workshops across the country. If you repair or service vehicles—especially hybrids and EVs—understanding this regulation is essential to staying competitive and compliant.

What Is MVIS?
MVIS is a mandatory scheme enforced by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). It requires car manufacturers to share technical service and repair data with independent repairers and registered training organisations at fair market value. This includes access to safety information for modern vehicles, particularly electric and hybrid models.

Why It’s Important
Before MVIS, independent garages were often locked out of key repair data, giving dealership networks an unfair edge. With the rise of complex vehicle systems like high-voltage batteries, hydrogen fuel systems, and electric propulsion, this lack of access was becoming a serious safety and business issue.

Now, MVIS levels the playing field. But it also comes with responsibility.

Restricted Access: The Role of Safety Information
Not all data is equal. MVIS requires that safety-critical information—anything related to high-voltage or hydrogen systems—must only be accessible to technicians who are verified as “Fit and Proper.”

This is where things get serious: If your technicians aren’t verified, they won’t be able to view or use safety data through platforms like Autodata.

The Fit & Proper Person Test
To meet MVIS criteria, a technician must:

  • Submit proof of relevant qualifications
  • Undergo identity verification
  • Make a declaration every time they access safety information
  • Confirm the data is used solely for repair or RTO purposes

This isn’t optional. It’s the law.

How Autodata and Digidentity Help You Stay Compliant
In October 2025, Autodata will integrate with Digidentity to offer the first fully MVIS-compliant identity verification solution in Australia. This integration enables garage owners and technicians to complete the verification process directly within the Autodata Workshop Application.

It’s simple, secure, and fast:

  • Garage owners register their business and invite up to three technicians
  • Technicians use the Digidentity Wallet app to verify their identity and upload qualifications
  • Once approved, they gain secure, QR-code-based access to safety information

The Bottom Line
MVIS is about safety, fairness, and the future of automotive repair. With Autodata and Digidentity, independent workshops don’t just comply—they thrive.
