ISSUE – Brakes binding
DIAGNOSIS & SOLUTION:
We are having difficulty finding the cause of a brake binding fault on a 2015 Vauxhall Astra. The brakes are being lightly applied without the pedal being depressed. We have checked the brake calipers and they are not sticking. Can you assist us?
Yes, we have had reports of this fault on Astra-K models. The fault is with the brake master cylinder pushrod not returning to its fully released position when the brake pedal is released due to a damaged brake master cylinder pushrod retaining clip. Remove the brake pedal position (BPP) sensor. Loosen the brake servo retaining bolts. Pull the brake servo away from the bulkhead. Detach the brake pedal from the brake master cylinder pushrod (fig.1.1.). Detach the brake master cylinder pushrod retaining clip from the brake pedal (fig.1.2.). Fit a modified brake master cylinder pushrod retaining clip, available from Vauxhall parts department, to the brake pedal. Apply grease to the inside of the brake master cylinder pushrod retaining clip. Tighten the brake servo retaining bolts to 19 Nm. Refit the brake pedal to the brake master cylinder pushrod. Refit the brake pedal position (BPP) sensor. Check adjustment of BPP sensor with diagnostic equipment. Carry out road test to confirm the fault has been rectified.
