Autodocta – Fiat 500X

VEHICLE: Fiat 500X

ISSUE: Squeal from front brakes when braking at low speed or coming to a stop

DIAGNOSIS & SOLUTION:

A customer is complaining of a squeal from the front brakes of their Fiat 500X. The squeal happens at low speeds when braking with the steering on a slight lock or when coming to a stop. We have heard the noise on road test and have checked the front brake pads and discs which all seem to be OK. Have you any ideas where the squeal could be coming from?

We have been made aware of the fault you described on 500X models with VIN up to P318018. The issue is an excessive amount of thread locking compound overspill between the front brake caliper carrier and the front hub carrier preventing the two components mating correctly (fig. 1.1.). Remove and discard the brake caliper carrier mounting bolts. Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the brake caliper carrier and the front hub carrier. Fit new brake caliper carrier mounting bolts, available from Fiat parts department. Apply thread locking compound to new brake caliper carrier mounting bolts before fitting. Tighten the brake caliper carrier mounting bolts in two stages: Stage 1: 5 Nm. Stage 2: 165 Nm. Repeat the procedure for the opposite side. Carry out road test to confirm the fault has been rectified.
